First authorized US edition of Marie Corelli’s Wormwood, published 1890 by the Mershon Co. Wormwood is a cautionary tale about the purported dangers of absinthe, the main ingredient of which is wormwood, which is where absinthe gets its name: The botanical name for wormwood is artemisia absinthium. It contains a chemical called thujone that has similar effects to THC, and it was alleged that absinthe dependency lead to addiction and ruin. Modern science has more or less debunked this- Absinthe is 80 proof and was the cheapest thing available, so many crazed artists and creatives took to it during the 19th century and it was ultimately these things eccentric, troubled figures who gave absinthe its controversial reputation.
