My loves for Victorian mourning & antique valentines collide in this rare & unusual “vinegar valentine” manufactured by Thomas Stevens of Coventry & London. Vinegar valentines are basically cartoons with something shady, not dissimilar to the novelty gift cards you can buy today. This one depicts a widow trying to pull eligible bachelors with her crocodile tears.
“Thus dressed in deep mourning with a tear streaming eye, you think you may catch some poor silly Hy.”
Hy would be short for Hyram (or Hiram), which was a popular masculine name back then. The irony of this cartoon is that she is not, in fact, dressed in mourning at all. Unclear if this is a nod to her insincerity or simply an oversight!
