Victorian Tinsel Foil Painting
Victorian Tinsel Foil Painting
Tinsel painting was a popular decorative art practiced in America throughout the second half of the 19th century. They are reverse paintings on glass with metallic foil behind translucent areas. Like so many similar Victorian decorative arts, including wool work, hair work, and theorem painting, these tinsel paintings were mostly done by women and girls at home, referring to instructions in books and magazines and botanical guides.
This particular example dates to the mid- 19th century and depicts an assortment of flowers in a vase with a ghostly woman’s face staring out from the front.
