These little handblown bottles were popular for scent samples throughout the 19th & very early 20th centuries. This is the style of bottle that erroneously became known as a “tear catcher” or lachrymatory bottle. There is a modern myth that widows would collect their tears in the bottle and empty them on a grave, or that when the liquid evaporated their mourning period was over. There is no shortage of primary source evidence on Victorian mourning customs but unfortunately there’s no evidence at all suggesting that such bottles existed. Perfume collectors usually call these “throwaway” bottles, because you were supposed to move your perfume to a fancier bottle and then chuck the these. They tickle the same part of my brain as fancy glass candy boxes: It’s amazing that something so fragile survives, particularly something meant to be kept only briefly then thrown away.

This particular bottle has an unusual flat shape, gilding on all sides, and also retains its original stopper. The stoppers are usually missing since they fall out easily. That residue you see on this one’s stopper… That’s wax, original to the bottle, meant to help hold the stopper inside.

RETURN POLICY

All sales are FINAL. I strive to provide clear photos & accurate information for every item, & to anticipate any questions you may have. It is the buyer's responsibility to examine these photos clearly & read the description in full before purchasing. If you have any other questions or require further views, you've only to ask.

- No cancellations.

SHIPPING

- Orders ship once a week. If you need something by a certain date, please let me know before purchasing. I am almost always able to accommodate requests.

Insurance is automatically added to every order for a very small fee, via the service Route. You can waive this insurance by ticking the box at checkout, but if you choose to do so, I cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen packages. I STRONGLY recommend using the Route service: UPS & USPS are notorious for denying claims, especially if a package is lost or stolen rather than broken. Route only requires you to fill out an online form & they pay out immediately without fuss. I make no money on any insurance premiums collected- The service is provided only for your benefit.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

- We are happy to ship worldwide once again! Be advised that there's no way for us to know on our end what your customs fees, if any, might be: Shopify doesn't calculate or charge international buyers for customs fees at checkout. Customers are responsible for being aware of and paying any necessary customs fees your country may charge. I am not responsible for packages abandoned at the post office due to unpaid fees.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

- I do not do "holds," reserves, or payment plans. However, if you need help with financing, many safe & easy options are available to you at checkout, including Shop Pay.
