Victorian Hand Painted Floral Plate
Victorian Hand Painted Floral Plate
Painting plates was a popular craft in the late 19th & early 20th century & their quality varies tremendously depending on how talented the painter was. Most of them are of quite simple floral arrangements & therefore not particularly interesting… This one is much more detailed than average: She even painted a postage stamp that lets us know where she was from, Worcester, MA! (That’s WUSS-TAH for y’all out of towners.) As is well known, we have a large Irish immigrant population here in MA & I suspect the harp & clovers are a nod to the painter’s heritage. Both are recurring motifs in Irish art, crafts, & tourist souvenirs alike.
