Stunning, very rare & unusual Victorian mourning cross stitch embroidery on velvet, a memorial for a man who died at 72 in 1893. The velvet looks black, but in direct light you can see it’s very dark blue. The central cross stitch features a cross with flowers, while the rest names the deceased, the date of death, where he is interred, and finally a memorial poem at the bottom. This piece measures 32” long and 22” wide and came to me from England. I decided to sell it unframed, as framing something this large would add a significant cost to the price, & I’d like to keep these special things as accessible to as many collectors as I can.
condition is excellent with some minor wear around the edges which will not show when framed. Some of the letters, especially at the bottom, appear unfinished. No rips, stains, or odors.
