This home medical encyclopedia contains a wide variety of interesting material from descriptions of medicinal plants & explanations of various diseases to quack science like phrenology & discouragements against “self abuse” that will make modern readers question whether “common sense” is an appropriate term for this title. The author is Dr. Ray Vaughn Pierce, one of the most successful purveyors of “patent medicines” in America, operator of the World’s Dispensary, & founder of the Invalids’ Hotel & Surgical Institute. “Patent medicines,” which were rarely ever patented, were 19th century cure-alls that rarely ever worked: Most of them were mainly composed of booze or opium.
Many contemporary doctors called out Pierce for quackery, and these complaints are very humorously addressed in the appendix.
All five color plates are present & there are many other black & white marginal illustrations throughout. Condition is good with wear at either end of the spine & corners, as shown. Textblock is overall good; binding is firmly intact, though the book has obviously been thumbed-through many times.
