What is the “bombastic” in rhetorical language, exactly? “But just immersed in joys Hymenial…” They couldn’t say very simply that the poor man was only just married when he died. This early 19th century epitaph was painstakingly copied down in beautiful gothic script by an unknown recorder. I suspect this page was originally part of a journal or keepsake album, in which it was very common for people to copy pleasing verses. It’s highly unusual for someone to copy out an epitaph belonging to someone unrelated to the individual, but it seems this person did so out of sheer amusement at the decidedly colorful and melodramatic language. This is my kind of dork.
This unique piece of mourning ephemera is presented in a beautiful, later Victorian frame about 14” tall.
