An exceptionally rare & unusual find for jaded Victorian mourning or funeral photography collector: A large format post mortem photo of an infant in their casket on reverse painted black glass mounted in a wood and brass frame. This style of turn of the century photo is not uncommon, but it’s very odd to find a post mortem example, and though the glass is always black, it’s especially evocative in the context of a funeral photo. Some minor condition issues: Minimal flaking of the glass that is only noticeable in direct light, some breakage to the back board, & two of the brass corners are broken. The other two corners are folded down to match. The piece displays beautifully. The glass plate itself measures about 10” long while the whole piece overall is closer to 13”. Not fitted to hang: I would display it on a shelf.
