Wonderful Victorian print from Honoré Daumier’s famous “Les bas bleus” series of satirizing advancements in women’s rights. The Bluestockings were a society of women who were educated, talented, and independent in some way who wanted to help support each other’s pursuits. The print was first featured in “Le Charivari” in 1844. It depicts a woman in a riding habit admiring herself in a mirror while her husband looks on with a concerned gaze.
“C'est singulier... il ne me vient plus d'idées maintenant que lorsque je suis au bois de Boulogne et que je trotte avec M. Edouard....” (How peculiar... Now the only times I am inspired are when I go to the Bois de Boulogne and ride with Mr Edouard....)
Monsieur Edouard is NOT her husband. The boi de Boulogne is just a park, but a park that has had a lowkey reputation as a meeting place for public sex for, apparently, at least a couple hundred years.
The print is in excellent condition and is in its original frame.
