The Young Lady’s Friend | Victorian Etiquette Guide | 1847
Etiquette guides like this Young Lady’s Friend from 1847 provide valuable insight into the everyday concerns of Victorian women and the roles they were expected to play in society- not only as wives and mothers but as a sort of vector for the entire family’s virtue. They are always amusing to read- some of the advice, of course, especially to do with courting and men, and is unbearably dated, while the advice on being a good friend and having good manners is quite timeless. Bound in turquoise cloth covers with blindstamped decorations in gilt. Some splits to the cloth at the hinges and bumped corners; textblock slightly askew.
