Trilby by George du Maurier is no longer a household name, but it was one of the most popular novels of its time. Upon its release in 1894, it sold over 200,000 copies in America alone. It has been adapted many times for stage and screen, and is best known for the manipulative villain Svengali, who hypnotizes the tone-deaf heroine Trilby into singing perfectly in concerts for his own benefit, leaving her with no memory of the experience. The book reflects the intense fascination with hypnotism, mesmerism, the occult, and the emerging field of psychology during the turn of the century. And yes: The Trilby hat is named after something the lead actress wore in a stage adaptation of this book. Today, original editions of this book are prized for the striking cover design featuring a spider web and winged heart.
This is a true first American edition of this popular Victorian title. 464 pages followed by 4 pages of ads for Peter Ibbetson & Tess of the D’Urbevilles. The book does have some condition issues: Someone cut out a gift inscription on the front flyleaf and the ad section at the back has come loose from the spine. The prized graphics on the cover are still pretty crisp and bright, but the cloth has some light soiling and fading from age. Bumped corners and spine slightly cocked. Offered at a low price as is.
