The story of Cock Robin is one of my favorite nursery rhymes: A little light lust murder played out among birds & barnyard animals. The Victorians were very interested in anthropomorphism, both as a general motif in decorative arts and as metaphors in morality tales about human behavior. Cock Robin will interest anyone with a soft spot for Victorian mourning: A good part of the tale is taken up describing how the animals come together for the funeral, with each animal playing their role in the burial and ceremony.
This is an exceptional, turn of the century antique children’s book version published by McLoughlin on linen. Books printed on linen and other cloth were popular materials for children’s books, as they hold up a little better to clumsy little hands. Some wear around the edges but otherwise it’s in very good condition.
