Late 19th century account of the life of Mother Julia Billiart, a nun who grew up during the French revolution, overcame many years of debilitating illnesses, received visions, and became a founder of the Sisters of Notre Dame of Namur. She was canonized as a saint in 1969 and is considered a patron saint of teachers and educators. After witnessing her father’s murder by robbers in their family store, she became paralyzed and unable to speak. She spent about 22 years bedridden- including the time when she had to flee her childhood home during the revolution. She had to hide in the bed of a wagon covered with hay to escape. She persisted in her devotion to a religious life and was miraculously cured from paralysis after her priest told her to pray a novena on June 1st, 1804, the Feast of the Sacred Heart.
