The Heart of Man: Either Temple of God or Habitation of Satan is a work “calculated to awaken & promote a Christian disposition.” It invokes highly figural, emblematic imagery to depict various states of the soul. The original German work by Johannes Gossner was first published in 1812 but the images were based on an earlier Catholic emblem book from the 1500s or 1600s. Gossner had originally been Catholic, but was ousted for his evangelical tendencies & eventually became a Protestant.

This is an English language version by Reverend David George Goyder in 1870, retitled “The Heart, Its Tendency to Evil, with Hints towards its Purification.” It contains six allegorical plates & an extra “discourse on human responsibility.” Condition is very good with some edgewear, owner’s inscription on the front flyleaf, and genealogical details written beneath by a descendant. The textblock is clean, although the binding is slightly loose. Overall it’s been well kept for a book that was clearly read and treasured.

RETURN POLICY

All sales are FINAL. I strive to provide clear photos & accurate information for every item, & to anticipate any questions you may have. It is the buyer's responsibility to examine these photos clearly & read the description in full before purchasing. If you have any other questions or require further views, you've only to ask.

- No cancellations.

SHIPPING

- Orders ship once a week. If you need something by a certain date, please let me know before purchasing. I am almost always able to accommodate requests.

Insurance is automatically added to every order for a very small fee, via the service Route. You can waive this insurance by ticking the box at checkout, but if you choose to do so, I cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen packages. I STRONGLY recommend using the Route service: UPS & USPS are notorious for denying claims, especially if a package is lost or stolen rather than broken. Route only requires you to fill out an online form & they pay out immediately without fuss. I make no money on any insurance premiums collected- The service is provided only for your benefit.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

- We are happy to ship worldwide once again! Be advised that there's no way for us to know on our end what your customs fees, if any, might be: Shopify doesn't calculate or charge international buyers for customs fees at checkout. Customers are responsible for being aware of and paying any necessary customs fees your country may charge. I am not responsible for packages abandoned at the post office due to unpaid fees.

OTHER THINGS TO NOTE

- I do not do "holds," reserves, or payment plans. However, if you need help with financing, many safe & easy options are available to you at checkout, including Shop Pay.
