Very poignant, early Victorian mourning booklet memorializing a little girl named Mary Jane. Neither her date of death, age, or illness are spelled out directly, but it seems from what I read that she died around age 6 of consumption, a leading cause of death at this time. Interestingly, the book mentions that her mother read to her an extract from ANOTHER memoir of a child when she was alive and well and this extract taught Mary Jane about virtue. She said she wanted to try her best, just as the other little girl did. The unnamed author notes that her mother ended up reading the entire memoir after Mary Jane passed. I explain to customers frequently that these books were meant to prepare children for the grim possibility of early death- either their own or a loved one’s, and to offer spiritual comfort to the bereaved, but it’s not often that I’ve seen these things discussed outright in an actual memoir.

I’m calling this a “booklet” but it seems to be a textblock without its covers. Some damp stains throughout. Sold at a low price as is.
