Rose Fyleman was one of the most successful British writers of children’s literature of her time, best known for her works on fairies and her 1917 poem “There Are Fairies at the Bottom of Our Garden.” Here we have an incredibly rare portrait of her taken by equally renowned British photographer and friend Howard Coster, who photographed the British royal family, A. A. Milne with his son Christopher and his original Pooh bear, G. K. Chesterton, Aldous Huxley, et al. I know him for his stunning portrait of the genderqueer artist Gluck.
The portrait is presented as found in its original frame and mat, which is signed with a gift inscription by Fyleman and also signed by Coster. The frame measures 14” x 15.5”
Very soon after acquiring this, I happened to score a signed first edition book by Fyleman: 40 Good Morning Tales. Refer to photos for condition: The photo is in excellent shape, but the book is in acceptable condition. It’s missing its dust jacket and there are water stains that affect many of the pages around the edges. Nevertheless, it is signed, and I couldn’t help but include it as a remarkable companion to this rare and special portrait.
