Exceptional antique devotional retablo of Our Lady of the Rosary or the Virgin of the Rosary, a Marian depiction popular in South America and Mexico. The painting dates to the 19th century and was done on pasteboard then backed with tin and enshrined in a wooden frame. It’s common to see Spanish colonial retablos painted directly on tin, but they also used to do them on paper or pasteboard. They were glued directly to the tin in order to help preserve them in rough weather and terrain. This is likely from the Andes region- my money is on Argentina. I strongly recommend leaving the piece in its original frame: The paint might fuse to the glass in a contemporary frame. Condition is excellent with some minor craquelure and surface dirt consistent with age. The corners of the board were not perfectly square, so you can see some tin peeking through at the extreme corners of the bottom. Measures about 16” tall in the frame; the retablo itself measures 13” tall.
