Exceptionally rare first edition of Whittier’s Legends of New England, published 1831. Unfortunately it’s missing the title page, but I believe this is the true first edition, as the title on the spine is green and page 98 does NOT have the correction featured in the amended version.
These almost never come up for sale and when they do, they are usually the corrected version, fetching between $1,400-$2,500 at auction. This one is offered at a low price, as is: Condition is poor with numerous issues in addition to the lack of title page. The table of contents page os ripped near the spine, the boards are very heavily worn, quite a bit of foxing affecting the first dozen pages or so, a loose page, and the title plate on the spine is chipped. This nevertheless remains an incredibly scarce edition that would very much be worth having professionally restored.
