This volume contains volumes XXV & XXVI of Graham’s Monthly, the Victorian periodical for which Edgar Allan Poe was an editor and then contributor. It runs from June 1844 to January 1845 & January to June of 1845, respectively. The latter features Edgar Allan Poe as a contributor: He has a full page engraving and biographical blurb. No written content by him, per se: Scholars argue he may have written that unattributed review of his nemesis Rufus Griswold’s Poets & Poetry of England in the Nineteenth Century. It certainly smacks of his delightful sarcasm as a reviewer! It was his criticisms of Griswold’s prior anthology of American poetry that kicked off their feud. Numerous black and white engravings, some fashion plates, mourning poems, a Halloween poem, and contributions by Longfellow and Bryant are also included. This volume is also full of poetry by Frances Osgood, who famously flirted with both Poe and Griswold to great scandal.
The textblock is very good but the leather spine is a bit desiccated and there are some bumped corners.
