Published in 1838 by the American Tract Society, Arthur is not so much a book about a boy as it is a book about sin, and the evangelical Victorian obsession with it. Arthur recounts the tale of a kindly, childless woman who adopts a baby from a relation who cannot care for him, and raises him to assiduously avoid sin until he is ready to commence his studied at a Christian ministry school and she passes away, satisfied that the children in her family are “washed in the blood of Christ.” Marbled cover boards rather worn. Interior good.
