This Victorian family record in its original wooden frame was drawn in brown ink by Elizabeth P. Nichols in 1855 when she was an 18 year old student at the Windham Phonetic School, a Quaker school in Windham, ME. Calligraphy, drawing, and copying were common exercises. A map of Palestine copied by her sister Phoebe at the same school is on view at the Boston Public Library, part of its Leventhal Map & Education Center.

An inscription was written by Elizabeth on the back of the frame later in life. It was hard to photograph but is pretty easy to make out in person. The top portion reads:

“Family record designed and executed at 18 years of age by Elizabeth Nichols at A. L. Larry’s school. This is to be given to some grand child of the Nichols family.”

Across the bottom:

“This I will to my nephew Chester Sawyer from his Aunt Lizzie, Sept. 1897.”

Refer to photos for size and condition. As suggested, the work is in its original frame, with newer wire and hardware.
