Very attractive, early 20th century wooden book rack with pyrography decorations. The ends measure about 5.5” tall and feature a classical style design with a woman reading. Each side presents one half of the Edward Bulwer-Lytton quote “There is no past so long as books shall live.” A prolific novelist across several different genres, Bulwer-Lytton coined many phrases like “It was a dark and stormy night” but he is perhaps best remembered for his novel Vril, which drew on his interest in the occult. This early work of science fiction has captured the imagination of everyone from the theosophists to Hollow Earth conspiracy theorists and even David Bowie.
The rack measures about 15” wide and will extend to 25”. Condition is very good save for one warped hinge. Displays and functions just fine, as shown.
