Longtime followers probably know my obsession with this turn of the century women’s fencing costume. Hardly difficult to see the appeal: It’s sort of like an antiquarian Hard Femme uniform. I especially love the red heart on the breast. I’m not quite clear on whether or not these costumes were actually worn to compete, but they were extremely popular in depictions of female fencers (“escrimeuses”) right through the 1940s.
It all started with a late 19th century painting by Jean Béraud of the actress Marguerita Sylvia, who was learning to fence in Paris and caught the artist’s eye. The look became a sensation, and was even copied by Florenz Ziegfeld for his stage shows.
Antiques with this imagery are very hard to find- I only have about half a dozen pieces in my collection. So I am delighted to be able to share one with you! Presented in an antique gilded frame. Refer to photos for size and condition.

- Insurance is automatically added to every order for a very small fee, via the service Route. If you choose not to insure your order, I will not be held responsible for lost or stolen packages.

- If you are outside the US & would like to purchase something, please message me to arrange payment either through Paypal invoice or through our Etsy outpost. I am not currently taking international orders on this website due to a problem with Shopify's shipping calculator.
