The Shan Van Vocht first emerged as an Irish patriotic ballad in the rebellion of 1796. It was later adopted as the name of an Irish nationalist magazine in the 19th century. It’s an anglicized, phonetical spelling of “The Sean-Bhean bhocht,” in Irish, “the poor old woman.”

Extremely scarce edition published by Cameron & Ferguson, Glasgow & London. Undated, circa 1870s. Refer to photos for size and condition: Pages are fragile and tanned from age. Plain green paper covers with an illustration of the titular old woman on the front cover and a list of ballads on the back. The front cover is partially detached from the spine and has some chips at the edge, as shown. Sold as is.
