These are Quaker books and always religious in nature: The virtues of the deceased and their devotion to God are dramatically emphasized, especially when the person suffered a long illness. Sometimes memoirs of a specific person were nationally circulated; sometimes they were mainly printed for a specific, bereaved community, in which case they are usually written by a family member or the local priest. These are from the Juvenile Series: They were meant to help children understand death at a time when infant, child, and maternal mortality rates were very high and illnesses like tuberculosis ripped through entire towns.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is an odd one: Susannah Whitrow died in 1677 of an illness she believed was a punishment from God for the sins of her father. She spent her final days repenting and warning against corruption.
